Lake Constance Summer School 2008
Welcome program and intensive language course German as a foreign language for new incoming students at universities of the IBH and students, who would like to study at IBH-universities in future
4th – 28th August 2008, University of Konstanz
(Arrival: 1st or 2nd August 2008; Departure: 29th August 2007)
For incoming international students who will be studying in winter semester 2008/2009 at a higher education institution belonging to the institutional network of the International Lake Constance University, and students intending to study at IBH Universities in future, the University of Konstanz, Germany, will be offering an intensive German Language course at the levels “Grundstufe” (Basic Level), “Mittelstufe” (Intermediate Level) and “Oberstufe” (Advanced Level). The language course will be accompanied by a welcome program in the afternoons and on some weekends. The welcome program includes lectures on history, art and culture and politics, as well as guided tours, visits to towns and excursions in the Lake Constance Region. In addition, visits to some member institutions of the International Lake Constance University are planned. The Lake Constance Summer School will be organised by the International Office of the University of Konstanz in collaboration with the Language Institute of the University of Konstanz.
For a better planning of the language classes we ask you to do the Goethe Institute Placement Test via internet. Please cross your personal result on the registration sheet.
Course fee:
230 Euro. The course fee covers the costs for the language course and the welcome program, but not the costs for board and lodging.
Board and Lodging:
Accommodation will be in single rooms in the halls of residence of the Student Welfare Service Konstanz and costs 240 Euro. Meals can be taken in the dining hall / cafeteria of the University of Konstanz.
Registration:
The course is limited to 80 participants. It is recommended that you register as soon as possible at the International Office of your IBH host University.

Fri. 1st and Sat. 2nd August 2008: Arrival, moving into the halls of residence. We recommend arrival on 1 or 2 August 2008. Please mind the opening hours of the caretakers in the halls of residence.
Mon. 4th August 2008, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.: Welcome and Introduction, Registration and Payment. German language assessment test and organisation into groups
Mon. 4th August 2009, afternoon: “Town Rallye” in Konstanz
Tue. 5th – Thu. 28th August 2009, 9 a.m. - 10.30 p.m. and 11 a.m. - 12.30 p.m: Intensive German language course. 76 lessons, introduction and language test included
Tue. 5th August 2008, afternoon: Sight-seeing tour of the town of Constance
Fri. 8th August 2008, afternoon: Trip to Meersburg
Fri. 15th August 2008: “Liechtenstein-Day” (national holiday). Excursion to Liechtenstein for the occasion of the national holiday, University of Liechtenstein
Wed. 20th August 2008: Trip to Dornbirn, Vorarlberg (Austria), University of Applied Sciences Vorarlberg, Dornbirn
Fri. 22nd August 2008: Farewell Party
Upon arrival, each participant will receive a complete detailed program.
Intensive language course:
Philologically trained and experienced lecturers will teach groups of around 10 - 15 participants at 5 - 8 different levels (basic, intermediate and advanced). The language course is not designed for absolute beginners. If you have no German language knowledge, you have to get in contact with the organizer before applying.
Contents: listening comprehension, oral skills, writing and reading of (original) texts are combined with grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation exercises. In the basic level courses, a text book is used. The text book costs about 12 Euro. In the intermediate and advanced levels, geographical and cultural topics and study specific skills (e.g. notation exercises, presentation techniques) will be treated.
Certificates: graded or ungraded certificates of participation with 6 ECTS credits
Requirements: regular active participation, homework (about 1 hour per day) and for a graded certificate an additional final test.
Class size: a maximum of 15 participants per class.
